OUR PURPOSE:
The primary purpose of Backcountry Horsemen of Washington is to work toward the perpetuation of the legal and moral claim by American people to use horses and mules for recreation on public lands.
- To preserve our cultural heritage - the use of horses, mules and packstock on public lands.
- To unite horsemen as a viable contracting group to work in partnership with governmental agencies to keep trails open.
- To encourage responsible citizen involvement in governmental actions affecting public lands.
- To oppose unjustified restrictions and closure to horse-use on public lands.
- To educate and inform horsemen and others interested in or effected by policies and programs of the Backcountry Horsement of Washington, about the impact of horse use on backcountry lands, especially fragile areas.
- To educate and inform horsemen and others about Leave-No-Trace camping and horse and mule handling practices.
- To demonstrate that horsemen are citizens concerned about protecting the environment, as well as sustaining economic equilibrium for the community and country.
GENERAL ACTIVITIES:
- Rides: Explore new trails and make new friends.
- Clinics: Annual packing and trail riding clinics.
- Volunteer Projects: Help maintain a trail, build a horse camp, or go on a cleanup project.
- Leave No Trace Education: Knowledge transfer about minimum impact camping and stock use which helps to pass the LNT Message to all horsemen.
- Conventions and Rendezvous: BCHW business and social gatherings including the sharing of information with other chapters from all over the state.
